I Love Muhammad Ali BUT…
Some of the biggest names in sport, show business and politics have put their names to a petition calling for boxing supremo Muhammad Ali to receive an honorary knighthood. Terry Wogan, Bob Geldof, Kevin Spacey and Steven Spielberg are all previous non-UK nationals to have received such an honour.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love Ali and I think he deserves an honorary knighthood (he would get an ‘honorary’ K because he’s not a UK citizen). But all the celebrity support and media coverage for the boxing legend over the last week or so, from the likes of Mayor Boris Johnson to ex-world heavyweight champion David Haye, got me thinking…
What about all the people doing great work for charity and their community? What about all the surgeons that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to save lives? What about the business leaders who generate huge numbers of jobs and tax revenue that we all benefit from?
It’s all very well that famous sports stars, actors and pop stars get the gongs they deserve. But it’s so much easier for those in the public eye to get noticed by the powers that be and to attract celebrity and media support.
So what should you do if you know an ‘extraordinary, ordinary person’ who you feel deserves a Queen’s honour like a BEM, MBE, OBE or knighthood?
The answer is simple: You should get them nominated. Don’t wait for someone to start a petition. Be proactive. You can nominate anyone you think deserves an honour. Simply visit our website and you should find all the help and guidance you need, then download the nomination form here. Make the effort to do it now, it might be that no-one else ever does.
Good luck Muhammad, you deserve it.
